Eileen has been training horses and competing for over thirty-five years in thirteen different events, from dressage and jumping, to working cowhorse and reining. Growing up around Pimlico there were plenty of thoroughbreds fresh off the track in dire need of an education. Although the experience involved more ER visits than she cares count, these magnificent creatures were among her greatest instructors. Since that was fox-hunting country, she would buy them at auction, rehabilitate them, teach them how to jump and sell them to pay her college expenses. But the more time she spent with the horses that had been pushed past their breaking point, both mentally and physically, she began to see the world through their eyes. Only then did she start to see their true potential, and her approach changed. She stopped ‘making’ them do what she wanted and started to ‘show’ them a better way, and help them become the athlete they were meant to be. Once she understood, Eileen’s efforts were no longer about tuition fees, but giving a horse a chance for a better quality of life, and sometimes even saving their life.
The ‘Secret’ to training horses…
Horses have taken me through a journey with only one pursuit, figuring out a way to form true partnerships with horses, built on kindness, trust and respect. Through decades of emergency room visits, countless bruises and scrapes, a mountain of frustration, and tons of sweat I reached one very important conclusion. I finally unearthed the 'Secret' to training horses.
People who try to 'force' a horse, or instill fear to get a desired reaction simply don't know any other way. I learned the hard way what a horse needs and how they learn, which enables me to bring the best out of them. And that only works because I give them the best of myself.
